Fashion is a tricky thing for many men. I often receive inquiries from readers wondering how to approach style, and why "style" even matters. I argue that presentation matters, regardless if it's a business plan or a business suit. For men, that means it's important to take the time to dress contemporarily; there's no need to be cutting edge, but up-to-date is a definite must.
Fortunately, it is not as difficult as many men think. Unless you have a taste for extraordinarily unusual styles, there shouldn't be much problem coordinating appropriate outfits. Particularly if you break it down to a couple simple rules.
To dress great, it's helpful to have a couple of basic rules-of-thumb to keep in mind. Fashion evolves constantly, but even so, these rules can help you look your best in almost any situation.
First of all, season should never determine color. While some colors may feel more "comfortable" in specific seasons, don't limit your choice of colors based entirely on the time of year. For example, while fall might seem like the perfect time for grays, browns, and blacks, don't forget that contrasting colours, white for example, can provide a stand-out look that'll get you noticed. It's more important to follow guidelines regarding patterns than sticking to specific color "rules".
For most men, understated colors tend to be the most appropriate. In addition, solid colors are a classic look that never go out of style, and are appropriate for almost any situation. If you are struggling to put together an outfit or wardrobe, it's always a great idea to start with a solid colored shirt. You won't go wrong.
While we're talking about color, did you know that your shoe color does not necessarily need to match your belt color?
It's a very common misconception that "different" somehow means "clashing". It's simply not the case. Ideally, colors or tones should be "related". And this goes for everything you're wearing, not just your shoes and belt. The key is to pick similar shades that fit into a certain "class" that go well together. So, keep in mind: don't match colors, pair.
Pairing is another interesting topic, particularly when talking about patterns. Most men think it's a faux-pas to pair patterns, but again, this is more of a suggestion than a hard and fast rule. While I'm willing to grant that purple stripes definitely don't go well with orange bubble print, pairing patterns can have a powerful effect on an ensemble. The key to remember is that paired patterns should be in a similar shade, with one pattern more subtle than the other.
As for pants, what's the best? Well, again, it always comes down to personal taste. But if you want to ensure you are up to date, there are two things to avoid: pleats and cuffs. Current styles in men's pants involve straight, clean lines. Pleats just add padding, which looks messy, and cuff belong on only the most formal of pants.
One last thing: make sure your pants are hemmed to the correct length. If you get your pants hemmed too short, it'll look like you've suffered an unexpected growth spurt. Just remember: no one wants to see your socks!
All in all, there are very few "rules" to men's fashion. There is room to express individuality while presenting an elegant appearance.

You might want to take him along shopping with you so that he can choose something that he likes to try. This may save you the heartache of having him reject everything that you buy without his approval. No matter what, don't give up, even if it means he'll only wear that one shirt just for you.

I love the bras at Victoria's Secret that are unpadded but nonetheless have opaque, shaped cups like the demi bra. I recommend you take a look at their web site for some ideas or stop into one of their stores and try some different styles on. Here's tips...try the bra on and put your top back on to really see how it looks!
Own a variety of different bra cuts...one more plunging, one with race backs, one with narrower straps, one strapless, etc because different tops and dresses call for different bra styles. Get a couple of the basic style and then one of each additional style should do it! You just never want your bra or its straps to show!
A pant suit is a great idea, and I would recommend that under it she wears a nice top that would show a bit of bust. I would suggest a suit with a jacket that is a bit tight around the waist and then loose to give her bust some shape, and straight trousers to make her look longer.
A nice top would be a wrap top to show her bust off. Another thing saw can wear is a top that is a bit long, say, reaching to her knee. Over a straight trouser. She can try to get a top that has some embroidery or jewels, or a hint of gold or silver colors to fit a wedding.
You have all the basic color slacks, three basic suits, some fun skirts and a wide variety of tops that should look really well with your bottoms. I'm at a loss for you not being able to make great outfits out of your pieces! You are probably just being too hard on yourself.

What to Wear to Work?
As some of you are recent college grads, I understand that you have become accustomed to literally rolling out of bed and grabbing anything off the floor or out the hamper and going to class. And it was great, wasn't it? But you know what? You can't continue to dress that way when you get a job in the corporate work world.
Recently it has become clear to me that some of you twentysomethings don't know what's appropriate to wear to an interview or in the workplace. And I am by no means a fashion expert but I can make a suggestion right off the bat: IRON YOUR CLOTHES! I've seen some of us twentysomethings on the train in the morning, going to work in nice outfits that look like you first balled it up and sat on it, twisted it around itself, jumped on it and then put it on. Please stop that. And for those of you who have to wash your hair every morning, please take the time to blow dry it out. And my people who sport a 'fro: comb it, shape it and make sure there isn't any lint in it. Really people, it doesn't take that much to make yourself look presentable.
I know what you're thinking: "I'm not going to succumb to the way society wants me to dress." But if you desire to make a career out of your job or want to be considered for promotions or taken seriously, you are going to have to play the part. You wouldn't expect to become a professional swimmer if instead of wearing the swimsuit you wore a sweat suit. So why would you wear a dingy shirt or tight skirt to work in a professional office?
Now, I realize that not every office has a business casual dress code. Some of you may be lucky enough to wear jeans to work. But in the event your offices' dress code is strictly enforced and you haven't a clue as to what to wear, I aim to help you out.
In general, clothes made of silk, rayon, silk blends, wool blends, polyesters or other synthetic material (not spandex) are good choices.
Women can wear pants, slacks, pants and skirt suits, dress shirts, skirts and dresses. The general rule is that dresses and skirts should be the length of your fingertips at your side or below the knee. Let me explain. If you stand up straight and place your hands at your side, your skirt should either meet or pass your fingertips. Please do not walk up into people's job wearing a skintight above the knee cocktail dress. It may get you looks from the guys but it will not get you respect, and wearing it to an interview with fishnet stockings (which are not acceptable with any outfit for work) won't get you the job either. Desiree Spivey, CEO, of Beauticontrol, says a reason why people dress inappropriately for work is because "everyone is a too fashionable. They can't differentiate whether they are going to work or going out to the club." This is true in the case of women. How many of you have seen someone wearing that tight skirt and low-cut off the shoulder shirt to work? I know I have.
For men, slacks, khaki pants, shirts, polo shirts, pullover sweaters and sports jackets are a great choice for the business casual office. Besides having a clean dress shirt, you must also wear a tee-shirt under your shirt, NOT a tank top. "No matter what type a shirt a man wears, if he is not wearing a tee shirt, the dress shirt will get soiled," says Lori Lepage, President, Living Out Loud, Inc.
And as long as you're not wearing sneakers, flip-flops or any kind of slippers then you'll be fine. LePage says for women, the shoes should match the belt and if you are not wearing a belt, the shoes should match your skirt or pants. Spivey says for men, shoes should match the socks.
One last thing I learned that I wanted to share with you is: "the bottom of your pants should meet the top of the heel to the mid part of the heel of your shoe, anything over that is too long," says, Lepage. I really learned a great deal in writing this article. I pray some of you have learned something as well. Because the next time I see one of you looking a mess I am going to call you on it. And I'd hope you'd do the same for me.

It's always great to mix trendy pieces with more classic looks to give you the perfect look that always looks up-to-date. Color is big for men this season (I love colored interesting shirts of all kinds), as are relaxed chic looks (like relaxed suits), etc.
Accessories that are hot are really simple: well kept shoes. It's one of the first things people notice, so always make sure the shoes are right and clean. Here's something I like to do. Instead of looking at celebs, I check out various magazines and advertising and check out different looks I like (for You GQ, Cargo) and then get shopping!
If you are wondering why some of today's most sophisticated men's stores - Polo Ralph Lauren, Bergdorf Goodman Men, Barneys New York - are stocked with enough hard-core color to resemble the team uniform section of a sporting goods shop, well, perhaps that's fitting. Color has become practically a contact sport.
Mens wear Bright New Look In the last few seasons, many men have developed a major passion for sharply tailored suits and brightly patterned dress shirts, snapping up $200 Etros by the half-dozen. But this spring, in the eternal game of one-upmanship known as fashion, the look has been taken to a new extreme. Solidly colored pants, sweaters and blazers - in tangerine, lemon, viridian, magenta, royal blue - have raised the stakes, and some men are, to retailers' surprise, taking the bet.
Retailers report that traditional two-button cotton sport coats and pinwale corduroys struck by a lightning bolt of color have become some of the hottest sellers of the season. And in a rare meeting of minds, old-school retailers like Paul Stuart are sharing a design aesthetic with edge-of-fashion lines like Burberry Prorsum and Duckier Brown.
"The first thing that blew out of Barneys was all the color," said Daniel Silver, a partner in Duckier Brown. "When we were designing it we were thinking: 'It's so bright. Are guys really going to buy this?' But they have. It's like someone knocked down the wall between his and hers closets."
The trend has obvious appeal to men who want an easy new way to express a bold streak. But it has an august precedent as well, in the late, great NBC peacock, Johnny Carson. In 1973, when country clubs swarmed with pants and blazers of every hue, Carson's own fashion line was the best-selling men's tailored clothing line in the country, according to Homi Patel, the chief executive of Hartmarx, which owns the line. In 1973 alone, 80,000 electric blue sport coats (with five-inch lapels!) were sold.
Unlike many looks with roots in the past, this one is a study in jarring contrasts. It has both the edge and cheek of early 80's New York, when Day-Glo color fueled the New Wave scene, and the ease and entitlement of an early 70's Republican enclave in Palm Springs.
"The roots are in that country club thing," said Joe Zee, the editor of the men's wear magazine Vitals. "The edge is in its conservative aspect." Striped shirts and plaid jackets can play into a conservative look, but solid colors, Mr. Zee suggested, are bolder. "Men are more used to pattern," he said. "So a pink striped shirt is easier for a lot of guys than an all-pink shirt. That's a more specific fashion statement."
No sector has taken up the call to color more than the hip-hop world, in which dandies like Usher, Farnsworth Bentley and Andre 3000 of OutKast (hard at work on a fashion line called Benjamin) will wear, and combine, the splashiest of colors. "You have urban rappers from Nelly to Puffy saying, 'I can wear this without being a sissy,' " Mr. Zee said.
Chris Chambers, a dapper vice president for publicity at BMG Music, feels the pull. "There's definitely a mixture of an urban thing with classic country club." he said. "I'll wear the pink Ralph Lauren blazer but maybe not with the white slacks they show. I'll wear it with some Evisu jeans and a cool sneaker."
Still, it takes guts. "I think a solid bold color looks fresh, but you have to have a level of confidence for it," Mr. Chambers said. What makes the look less brash and more appealing, he said, is its history as the onetime uniform of 19th-hole golfers everywhere.
Ross Geisel, a Manhattan fund-raiser, has taken a shine to color because of its associations with a life of gentlemanly ease. "I can get away with wearing it to work, and then if you go out afterward, you don't look like you came from the office," Mr. Geisel said.
Another reason he likes extreme color is that there are so few rules about wearing it. That, he maintains, makes it easier, not harder to dress. "It doesn't matter what you do," he said. "I have a loud pink shirt on today with a corduroy chocolate brown blazer. I can wear it spring, summer or fall, with any shoe I want."
Even with his outlaw attitude, he said the style reminds him of his father's country-club clothes. But the concept of Johnny Carson as a symbol of style is lost on him. "All I remember is Carnac," he said.

Mens Clothing Suit Styles
Suit jackets certainly can be worn with other things, but you're right, you do have to be careful. Can you let me know your husband's age and size? The last thing I want to do is recommend unsuitable attire!
Also, have you checked with a tailor that the pants cannot be altered? Most suit pants can be either let out or taken in by up to 1 3/4 inches if done properly, and of course the hems can be altered to suit length as well.
Ok, the dark blue subtle pinstripe, this is where the importance of your husband's age comes in! I would recommend using this for an informal/formal look and teaming it with a smart pair of jeans, and a formal work shirt.
Matching this jacket with a pair of formal pants will be nigh on impossible, but matching it with jeans and going for a casual yet still smart look is easily done. What you have to do is think about the accessories. As I said, a nice oxford shirt in either a pale blue or white, along with a pair of smart jeans and then a black belt and black shoes, either plain oxfords or perhaps a pair of suede loafers even.
For the glen plaid, this can be matched into something more formal and worn almost as you would a sports jacket. Pants will have to be dark, plain and pleated. I would recommend dark navy pants, and brown shoes and belt. In terms of shirt and tie, you can't go far wrong with a white shirt, and then a tie that brings out a bit of the color in the glen plaid, so a tie with a hint of red in would go nicely.
If you are looking for a more western interpretation, then you can find suits with a mandarin influence, or perhaps a Nehru style suit which fuses Indian themes within the suit style. I would avoid the white shirt/black tie routine, it'll either make you look like you're going to a funeral, or going to carry out a hit on someone!
What you need for interviews is something safe, but also nice and smart. You can't go too far wrong with a pastel blue (not a navy blue, more of a sky blue) cotton shirt with tie that has gold/yellow/blue in it. Alternatively a lilac shirt with a tie that has a combination of purple/blue in it works well.
A general rule of thumb that I advise is that the darker the shirt, the lighter the tie color to lift it. The opposite of that works too, i.e. if you're wearing a very light shirt, then a heavier colored tie is good.
I say go ahead and buy the suit. It sounds like a winner. There are always a lot of questions asking whether or not a double breasted suit is hip and I say it can be. It's a classic look that will never go out of style - although, sometimes the look is more "in fashion" than others. However, because this suit is a classic it tends to look better on men and not young men or teens.

How To Buy a Suit
The men's business suit: ubiquitous, ingrained, versatile, mandatory, and a staple of industrial age attire for over one hundred years. Considering how fashion trends normally fluctuate wildly even in the space of twenty years, it is amazing how little the basic business suit has changed. About the most variety offered is the color scheme, which varies through navy blue, gray, khaki, and camel. Here's a quick, easy guide to picking out the clothing ensemble which you'll spend a good portion of your life wearing:
Choosing a jacket style: The two-button, single-breasted jacket is a popular style, but three or four button jackets are also available and are usually seen in colder climates. Only thin men should wear formal double-breasted jackets, which tend to add bulk to your figure. They have to be kept buttoned at all times, or else the jacket hangs awkwardly.
Select a fabric, its color, and pattern. If you opt for a patterned fabric, check to see that the patterns line up at the shoulder and lapel seams. High-quality worsted wool is the most seasonally versatile fabric. Cotton and linen are better for summer wear. Avoid blends that are made with too much polyester, as they don't breathe well and look too cheap. The days of the polyester leisure suit are long dead, in places other than coastal California. Crumple the fabric to make sure it bounces back instead of wrinkling. You want a durable fabric that will go without dry-cleaning and pressing as much as possible.
Selecting a pants style: Pleats make pants dressy and provide room for movement without risking tears, while flat-front pants have a slimming effect. Cuffed legs are formal, add weight to the suit and can make the leg seem shorter. Pants without cuffs elongate the leg and are more informal.
Test the jacket for a good fit. Make sure the collar lies flat against the back of your neck and shows at least a quarter of an inch of shirt collar rim. Shoulders should be lightly padded and neither too boxy nor too sloped; the idea is to make your shoulers square and neither round nor padded like a linebacker. Where watches are concerned, the more formal the occasion, the thinner the watch should be. Analog watches with hands are more formal than digital watches. In the most formal situations, the most acceptable choice is either a pocket watch or no watch at all. Generally speaking, one should not wear rubber sole dress shoes. Leather soled shoes are not only traditional, but more importantly they almost always have uppers that are of a far better quality and have a much more appealing appearance.

Just look for something that has shape but is not form-fitting and just gently flairs as it reaches the hem. No cinched waists or belts. Go for darker colors as well.
If you find something two toned or multicolored, just make sure the color change does not occur at or around your waist. So of the clothing out there will look like they don't change color, but if you look good or if you have them in the right light then you can see that the color on the clothing will change. Just keep in mind that one day you will wear clothes that show off your body, then from that day on you can wear anything that will make you feel comfortable.
