Beautiful Braided Rugs
My husband and I are friends with a couple that we met through our church. We enjoy their company and through the years we have done many things together. We will get together at each others homes to play cards. We also go out to eat and to plays and other events. Each year between Christmas and New Years we take a day off of work and spend time together. Last year we went to a center that had several homes that had been replicated. Each home was from a different country and was decorated for the holidays in the traditions of that country. The houses were spaced several yards apart.
There were also old world shops set up to create a small village atmosphere. The homes were life sized and had actors dressed for the time period and country that they were suppose to be representing. You had your choice of walking through the village and having a sleigh ride back to your car, or you could take the sleigh ride to the far end and work your way back. It was a very cold day so we decided to begin walking to the closest house.
The first house was from German decent. The first thing I noticed as we walked in was the beautiful braided rug. I am from German ancestry so I knew that the area rug was an authentic handmade piece. My grandmother always had a colorful braided rug in front of her kitchen sink. She would make them during the winter months. The woman that was dressed in period costume was sitting in front of the fireplace and was sewing the strips of fabric together that would be used to make the area rugs.
All kinds of scrap fabrics are cut into strips and are sewn together to form ropes. The ropes are then braided together. Once the ropes are long enough they are wrapped around each other until the desired size is reached. The braided rug is then stitched together so that it will not uncoil. My husband and I have talked about learning these braiding techniques to make our own rugs. The women told us that after the holidays are over the different houses stay opened and they have classes to teach the various old world crafts. She was going to be teaching rug braiding in January.
We continued on our tour of the different houses. Each ethnic group has added a different way of celebrating the holidays. It was very interesting to discover where some traditions have originated. We thoroughly enjoyed our day and my husband and I have promised each other that we will learn how to make a braided rug.

There is nothing like the warmth and ambiance of a traditional wood burning fireplace. Most everyone agrees that the heating efficiency has a lot to be desired, as most of the heat produced from the wood fire goes directly up the chimney. However, the crackle of the logs burning, along with the glow of the hardwood coals has a welcoming and relaxing effect to anybody within the space.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with a traditional fireplace. After all, the American Pioneers used one every day of their lives. This is when and where the tradition started, out of necessity. Their basic survival depended upon a fire in their cabin or living space.

Do not use wood or gypsum board for this as they allow moisture to get in under the tile and the job will never be quite 'right'. This is a very common mistake.
After the floor has been leveled and prepped, you are ready to install. Pick out a corner and start laying down tile. Mark the areas to make sure you are putting them in the right place, this is especially important when adding accent pieces. Now you are ready to start placing the tiles.
Use spacers to ensure even spaces throughout the job. You don't want to have a ¼" joint width on one tile only to have a ½" joint on another. If you are laying very small tiles or some boarders, they will come on webbing so you can just lay them, without worrying about the joint.
A tool that you are going to want with you on the job is a pair of snipers. This will be for when you are going under counters or other areas where you will not be using a full piece of tile.
Once the ceramic tiles are placed, you will need to wait for the mortar to set. Refer to the instructions on the bucket. This will usually take 12-18 hours. After the mortar has dried and the tiles are set, it is time to grout. If this is your fist tile job, make sure you get enough grout for the whole job. Again, gout comes in dye lots and you don't want to start with one shade of gray and end with another.
All you need to do is apply the grout according to the manufacturer's directions. Be very liberal with your application. You can always take off if there is too much, but it is very difficult to go back and add more. Be sure you wipe off any grout that gets on the tile while it is moist, before it has a chance to harden. Trying to remove dried grout may damage the ceramic tiles.

It is recommended that you take your time when you purchase your ceramic tiles. Make sure you are buying from a reliable source. Also, be sure to order all your materials at the start of the job. It is better to buy too much than not enough. Make sure there is a fair return policy just in case you have WAY too much for your job. Ask the store to direct you to the correct ceramic tile for your application. If you are putting tiles in the bathroom, maybe you want something with a non-skid finish.
